Celibacy or Purity?
What am I really choosing?
There’s a question I’ve been wrestling with for a while.
Not loudly. Not publicly.
Just inside me.
Am I pursuing celibacy… or am I pursuing purity?
They sound similar, but they’re not the same.
Celibacy is the decision not to have sex.
Purity is the posture of your heart.
One is physical.
The other is spiritual.
And the truth is simple:
You can be celibate and still not be pure.
Because purity isn’t about what your body avoids.
It’s about what your heart desires.
I’ve seen people “behave” their way into celibacy while their mind is fighting a whole different war.
I’ve seen people who aren’t touching anybody, but thoughts are touching them.
I’ve seen the performance, the fear, the hiding, the guilt.
And I’ve seen myself in some of those moments too.
And since we’re being honest…
Celibacy can be wrong if you’re still masturbating or watching pornography.
Because your body may be abstaining, but your heart, your imagination, your desires, your hidden habits are still feeding something that takes away from God.
That is not purity.
That is just silence on the outside and noise on the inside.
Let’s be honest…
Social media is loud.
Temptation is loud.
Loneliness is loud.
And sometimes, lust feels like the easiest way to silence all the noise.
But purity isn’t just “don’t do it.”
Purity is “God, take my heart too.”
It is choosing intention over impulse.
It is saying, “I don’t just want to avoid sin, I want to love God with my desires.”
Celibacy says: I’m not doing it.
Purity says: Even when nobody is watching, my heart is Yours.
And look, this isn’t about perfection.
None of us are perfect.
Life is real.
Hormones are real.
Thoughts are real.
Weak moments happen.
But God is not standing with a scoreboard.
He is walking with you.
He is not just after your behavior.
He is after your becoming.
For me, I’ve learned that purity is a journey.
Some days I’m focused.
Some days I’m fighting.
Some days I’m frustrated at myself.
But every day, God keeps reminding me that He’s not disappointed in my struggle. He is invested in my growth.
Purity becomes easier when you are honest.
When you know your triggers.
When you’re not trying to act like you’re made of stone.
When you realize temptation doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re human.
And purity becomes deeper when you let God deal with the internal battles nobody sees.
The desire for intimacy
The need for validation
The longing to be held
The curiosity
The emotional gaps you don’t talk about
Because purity isn’t the absence of desire.
Purity is surrendering desire.
So here’s the real question:
Am I abstaining because I fear sin, or am I pursuing purity because I love God?
I’m learning something new each day.
Celibacy is a choice.
Purity is a lifestyle.
One is discipline.
The other is devotion.
And I’m choosing devotion.
Because at the end of everything, I want my heart to be a place God is comfortable staying in.
Not just a place that avoids mistakes.
But a place that desires Him.
If you’re on this journey too, you’re not alone.
Let’s keep walking, learning, and growing with sincerity and grace.
Always.

This piece left me with so much thoughts to ponder on, I was struck with the hard truth that so many persons who claim to practice celibacy are not actually pure. Celibacy is physical, while purity is actually abstract.
Hey beautiful peace, I wrote an e-book about steward celibacy, it answers most of your questions. If you get around to it, kindly give me your feedback. https://bodybylizah.gumroad.com/l/qpzgy
